East Flat Rock was named in the early 1900s after "The Rock", a large, flat granite rock that served as a meeting place on a common Cherokee trading path. Beginning in the 1820s, low-country residents from South Carolina, in search of an escape from the heat and humidity of the lowcountry, started buying land from early settlers and building their summer estates in the area. Later, the arrival of the railroad brought even more wealthy residents to the area.
Much of the East Flat Rock area began as a bog, and only when equipment was invented and then purchased, in the late 1800s, was there enough settlement to form a community. Today, the East Flat Rock Bog is a natural heritage area of the N.C. Natural Heritage Program.
